0.8.125 October 2026
  • A Remote Desktop session to the other PC no longer stops the cursor from crossing: a monitor that is not connected leaves out only its own screen, and the other PC is not controlled while it is used through Remote Desktop.
  • The cursor stays on the other PC when its monitors change, as long as the screen you are using is still there.
  • The advice to pair again can no longer be brought about by another device right after a restart. 0.8.0 and 0.8.1 work together, and paired PCs stay paired.
0.8.024 October 2026
  • Update both PCs together: 0.8.0 connects with protocol 4 and does not talk to 0.7.9 or older. Paired PCs need no new code.
  • After pairing, the two PCs use a long random key of their own instead of the pairing code, and the host follows only the PC it was paired with.
  • Security hardening: no files unpacked into the temporary folder, no writes through links in the user folder, links open without administrator rights, password-manager copies stay on their PC, and the firewall rule admits only the local network segment.
  • Optional audio sharing: hear the other PC in your headset. The keyboard and mouse run on a thread of their own, and a locked PC no longer floods the log.

  • Windows x64 and ARM64 builds now include Microsoft .NET 10.0.13 LTS. No separate runtime installation is needed.
  • The immediate copy/paste synchronization, background clipboard retries and security fixes from 0.7.8 remain included.
  • Existing pairing codes, licenses and settings carry over. This release is Windows-only; Linux remains a separate preview and audio is not included.

  • Text copy and paste now synchronizes immediately in both directions. Busy clipboards retry in the background, newer copies replace older pending content, and received content does not echo back or hide your next local copy. Update both PCs for the full improvement.
  • When the other PC shows a Windows UAC prompt, the cursor returns home. Use input attached to that PC to dismiss its prompt; DeskStitch reconnects when the normal desktop returns.
  • Settings are never saved with a plaintext pairing code when Windows encryption fails. Clipboard image helpers no longer inherit unrelated handles from the administrator process.
  • Logging recovers from temporary file locks, counts UTF-8 bytes correctly, and caps growth during rotation failures. Both architectures include the .NET 8.0.32 security update.
  • Website request limits and release automation are hardened, and download links and checksums refresh correctly after a release.

  • The installer and the program are signed, so Windows can tell you who published DeskStitch instead of warning that the publisher is unknown. Nothing else changes. SmartScreen may still warn for a while: a new certificate earns its reputation from downloads over time.

  • A PC can no longer be worn down by what the other one calls itself: names longer than any real name are refused, and the log has a size limit rather than only a limit on the number of lines. The log file is now also started afresh when it gets large.
  • Opening an image from the other PC happens in the background, so the status window stays responsive while it works.

  • Three corrections to the change in 0.7.4. The part that opens images from the other PC now really has no special rights: 0.7.4 removed its administrator rights but left it at the privileged level Windows gives an elevated program.
  • Each PC limits how much work the other can leave waiting. That limit measured some kinds of message and guessed at others, so a message stuffed with text slipped past it. It now measures what actually arrived.
  • Sending a large image to that helper can no longer hang past its time limit.

  • Images arriving from the other PC are opened by a second copy of DeskStitch that has its administrator rights taken away. Reading image formats is a big, complicated job and a malformed image is the classic way to attack one, so it no longer happens in the part of DeskStitch that can type into any window. Pasting is unchanged.

  • An independent review of 0.7.2 found four things worth fixing. Daily use is unchanged and the two PCs talk to each other exactly as before, so there is no need to update both at once.
  • The pairing code in the settings file is now actually encrypted: 0.7.2 added the protection but only applied it the next time something saved the file. Starting this version rewrites it once, by itself.
  • "Start with Windows" checks who owns the program folder, not only who may write to it. Windows lets an owner change that list, so the old check could call a folder safe when it was not.
  • Neither PC can be flooded into unresponsiveness by the other. Both now limit how much waiting work a peer can leave behind, by number of messages and by size.
  • On our side: a purchase could in rare circumstances be recorded in a way that left a refund unable to find the licence it belonged to.

  • The pairing code is stored encrypted in the settings file, so a copied or backed-up settings file no longer carries a usable code. Yours carries over by itself.
  • Automatic discovery no longer shares its network port with other programs on the same PC.
  • Licence keys and the update check now accept more than one publisher signing key, so a key can be replaced without invalidating licences already sold.
  • Going back to 0.7.1 or older means entering the pairing code once more.

  • An independent security review of 0.7.0 found four problems that 0.7.0 itself did not fix. Update both PCs.
  • A PC that had never been paired would accept a connection from anyone, because the placeholder pairing code that ships in the settings file is published openly. It now refuses to connect until a real code is set.
  • The pairing code appeared in the status line, the tray tooltip and notifications. It is now only ever shown behind the Show button.
  • The check that decides whether "Start with Windows" is safe missed individual accounts and custom groups, and looked at one folder rather than the whole path.
  • A flood of messages could make the window stop responding, including the key that brings the cursor home.

  • A security pass over the whole product. Both PCs must run 0.7 or newer: it does not talk to 0.6 and older, and pairing codes are now 10 characters, so the code has to be entered once more.
  • Every connection agrees on its own encryption keys, with both sides proving they know the pairing code first. A recorded session can no longer be replayed into a later one, and a code that leaks later does not decrypt what was captured earlier.
  • A stranger who connects to the client PC learns nothing, the live connection is kept until a newcomer proves the code, and an address that fails is made to wait longer each time.
  • The pairing code is never written to the log, and the diagnostics zip says what it contains before it is created.
  • "Start with Windows" works only for the installed version, since that option runs DeskStitch with administrator rights.
  • The update check verifies a publisher signature over latest.json and accepts download links only on the official release page.
  • The installer allows DeskStitch through the Windows firewall itself, and removes that permission when you uninstall.
